The decision window

For art programmes, specification typically runs from 30 to 15 months before opening and purchasing from 14 to 5 months before opening. There are two ways into a project: through the specification or through the tender. A product that is already in the spec goes into the tender with the best odds.

Art is specified either by the interior design studio directly or by a dedicated art consultant working alongside it, with purchasing routed through the owner's or operator's FF&E procurement process. International brand standards cover art more loosely than lighting or textiles, which leaves independent, boutique and soft-brand hotels with more freedom and gives art consultants a larger role on those projects.

Acting before a project's specification window closes puts a consultant or supplier ahead of the design brief rather than reacting to it.

What is changing in hotel projects

Art Consultants Join Design Teams Earlier

Hotel operators increasingly bring in a dedicated art consultant alongside the interior design studio from early in the project rather than after the architecture is fixed. Budget and placement decisions move earlier as a result, with high-traffic zones such as corridor ends and lift lobbies planned from the start.

Hotel Design Treated As Cultural Narrative

Design media increasingly frame hotel interiors, including art, as a deliberate narrative reflecting a property's culture, history or mood rather than a late decorative layer. That framing pulls art decisions into the same early conversation as architecture and materials.

Local Artists Replace Generic Catalogue Prints

Murals, sculpture, textiles and photography sourced from local artists are described as a new baseline for hotel public areas rather than a premium option. The shift favours projects willing to commission work tied to a specific place over standard catalogue art.

Museum Partnerships Elevate Luxury Art Programmes

At least one global luxury hotel group now runs a recurring, museum-partnered art programme with newly commissioned work each edition. It signals that leading luxury brands treat art as an ongoing curatorial programme rather than a one-off installation at opening.
